Membership Overview
Combined Membership Model
The International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) is the global organisation representing the HPB community worldwide. To strengthen collaboration and better serve members, IHPBA works in partnership with three Regional Associations:
- The Americas: Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA)
- Asia-Pacific: Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA)
- Europe Africa and Middle East: European-African Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (E-AHPBA)
Together, we offer a combined membership, bringing together the strengths of both the global and regional HPB communities through a single, combined membership. Rather than choosing between regional and international engagement, members benefit from both through one membership experience.
The model is built on the principle that while IHPBA and the Regional Associations remain independent organisations, they serve many of the same members and are strongest when working collaboratively.
A Fairer and More Equitable Membership Model for 2027
Following extensive consultation with members around the world, IHPBA is pleased to introduce a new three-tier membership model, effective from the 2027 membership year.
Developed by the IHPBA Membership Affordability Working Group, the new model reflects feedback received from members and has been designed to make membership more equitable and accessible, while supporting the long-term sustainability of the Association.
The revised structure uses a transparent, evidence-based approach, with membership fees determined according to each country's income and resource status using internationally recognised classifications from the Research4Life HINARI Programme and the World Bank.
In addition, the new affordability model extends tiered pricing to Trainees and Allied Health Professionals, ensuring these important member groups also benefit from a fairer fee structure.
This updated approach demonstrates IHPBA's commitment to supporting HPB professionals worldwide by reducing financial barriers to membership and ensuring that colleagues from different economic settings can access the same valuable global network, educational resources, research opportunities, and professional collaborations.
We believe this is an important step towards a more inclusive global community and thank the Membership Affordability Working Group, our Regional Associations, and members who contributed their feedback throughout the review process.

Types of Membership
This membership is offered to a qualified medical practitioner or scientist actively involved in any of the hepatic, pancreatic or biliary fields.
AHPBA Region: This membership is offered to any resident or fellow enrolled in a program of medical education or research. Junior members must convert to active members after training.
A-PHPBA/E-AHPBA Regions: Offered to those members who are presently a trainee, resident or fellow enrolled in a programme of medical education or research, or any practicing surgeon under the age of 35.
AHPBA: This membership is offered to any health care provider who is not a physician or scientist. This includes, but is not limited to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, clinical nurse practitioners, clinical trial managers, physician assistants, and technologist.
A-PHPBA/E-AHPBA: This membership is offered to any healthcare practitioner who is a nurse, PA, NP, OR, radiologist, anaesthesia technician or other practitioner actively involved and interested in any of the hepatic, pancreatic or biliary fields.
Offered after retirement from active academic and/or clinical practice. Senior members do not have voting rights.
Awarded to distinguished individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the fields of hepatic, pancreatic and biliary disease. These contributions can be clinical or scientific. An honorary member is proposed by a member of the IHPBA or Regional Association Council which then seeks approval from the membership at the next General Assembly. Honorary members have voting rights, but are excluded from holding office and are exempt from the annual membership subscription.
