It recognises an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and made outstanding contributions to the field of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery, as well as to the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA).

- Outstanding service and contribution to the IHPBA.
- Preference is given to individuals who have retired, or are nearing retirement, from active HPB practice.
- Current IHPBA membership is desirable but not essential.
The award is not presented posthumously.
